The Preferences dialog lets you set basic options for Citation. To display the Preferences dialog, click File, Preferences.

You can set preferences for the following:

Location of Files
Indicates the default directories for the files used by Citation.

Datafiles
The default directory for your datafiles should be c:\citation. This is the directory Citation will use to look for datafiles when you choose Open Datafile. It is also the directory in which Citation will save your datafiles.

Documents
This is the directory you usually use for papers. Unless you indicate otherwise, Citation will look for documents containing Access Keys in this directory.

Error file
This is the file containing a list of Access Phrases cited in a paper, but not found in your datafile.

Disciplines
Sets a disciplinary preference for publishing styles to display as choices in the Bibliography and Generate Citations dialog boxes. Publishing styles are grouped into areas:
  • Biological, Medical, and Life Sciences
  • Humanities and Social Sciences
  • Physical and Earth Sciences

Checking a disciplinary group allows the publishing styles for journals and academic presses in that area to display in the Publishing Style list boxes. (Check all three disciplines to display all of the available publishing styles.)

Options

Write One Reference at a Time
Citation can write references in two modes. When this option is checked, each citation will display on the screen, as it is generated. This option makes it easier to catch errors, and to monitor the progress of the program. It is, however, slower in this mode. Disabling this option will speed up the writing of citations.

Publishing Style Defaults
When this option is selected, Citation will change the settings for Multiple Citation Separator and Delimiters automatically, according to specifications set in the publishing styles.

Italics as Underline
Citation uses italics for publishing styles that require a different print attribute to be assigned to significant works (i.e., books, journals, collections). If this option is checked, Citation will use underscoring, rather than italics.

Assign Unique Cite Keys
When this option is checked, Citation will check the Cite Keys to make certain they are unique.

Automatically Insert Cite Keys
When this option is checked, Citation will write the Cite Keys for records, automatically. Note that Cite Keys (Access Phrases in versions prior to 8) for all note records must be entered manually.

Suppress Title Capitalization
For many publishing styles, Citation automatically converts titles entered in lower case to titles with the first character of significant words capitalized. Check this option to disable the capitalization of titles.

Force One [HRt] Between References
Check this option to force a single hard return between citations.

Force Two [HRt] Between References
Check this option to force two hard returns between citations.

Use Journal Abbreviations
Check this option to use the Journal Abbreviation table for journal names in your citations.

Use Publisher Abbreviations
Check this option to use the Publisher Abbreviation table for publisher names in your citations.
