Conserving teaching time and energy while reinforcing good research methods:
Citation helps students "systemize" the process of documenting sources
One of the most challenging tasks for instructors today is that of impressing upon students
the importance of documenting sources for research papers.
Citation is a carefully designed tool used by instructors all over the country now
to help students build good research habits: it is designed to encourage
students to get into a routine of recording bibliographic information on sources they consult in their research,
and take careful notes (with details about where quotes can be relocated
by someone reading their paper).
What instructors who use Citation to supplement their materials for writing research papers
are telling us is that the program is much more effective as a way of encouraging
students to develop good research habits than the traditional "notecards" system.
By imposing a "structured approach" on the basics of research writing, Citation
emphasizes the conceptual basis for documenting sources, and the routine is much
more likely to be a learning experience for the student. Citation's style guide
(see http://citationonline.net/styleguide)
teaches them how to follow citation rules for collecting necessary bibliographic information
when they are gathering "facts" or evidence for their discussions. The data entry forms help them
learn about the importance of editions and editors, and the note forms help
them understand the significance of getting their specific page references right.
Accidental plagiarisms are much less likely when students are using a research
tool like Citation. If they follow the system, gathering notes without information
on the source work is just not possible.
Apart from helping students avoid accidental omissions - Citation can make a real contribution
to the broader skills instructors strive to pass on to students with research assigments -
the ones that they will be using as they move into the professional world:
- Giving credit to others for original ideas, research, findings and expression
- developing discussions with supporting remarks or findings from colleagues
or experienced researchers in the field
- Demonstrating that their perspective or position has been well-researched
- Letting their audience know where they can go for more information
These valuable skills developed by research paper assignments are reinforced
by the straightforward, structured approach Citation helps them adopt as research methods.
For a summary of this system, see the capsule description of
the Citation ABCs -
a simple system, easily incorporated into a course schedule, that's really effective in
helping students develop good research habits
.
Note as well that the course text program makes Citation affordable for students.
See the dept licensing and text book cost information on
this page.
We are happy to provide examination copies of Citation for consideration as a text to be included in university, college or high school courses. The evaluation period for such an examination is 90 days. You can request an examination copy by completing the
online Examination Copy Request form.
If Citation is adopted as a text for a class with 10 or more students* within the 90 day period, instructors may keep the Citation book and CD as a desk copy. A syllabus for the course that includes Citation listed as one of the texts, along with a copy of an order placed with the Bookstore above (or a brief note indicating that your department has purchased a license, or that students will be ordering using one of the methods described above), must be sent or faxed within 90 days* to:

Tutorials designed for students
Few instructors like to devote valuable class time to teach students how to navigate their way through
a software program. Citation includes several tutorials written especially for students writing Research papers.
A short version of this tutorial (which will help instructors as well) is available in PDF format at:
http://citationonline.net/c8docs/CitationPrimer.pdf
A longer version of this tutorial is at:

Background information for students on documenting sources
A section of more formally worded introductory topics, too, has been added to Citation's online documentation,
to provide students with helpful background basics about the significance of documenting sources accurately

Citation Styleguide
Citation includes a StyleGuide to help students enter complete bibliographic records for all types of source works, including internet resources (a growing concern when it comes to documenting sources, for many students), legal & legislative materials (something you won't find on similar bibliographic packages). The Citation Styleguide is based on examples in the references sections of new MLA Handbook, the Turabian Manual of Style, APA 5th edition, AAA Guide, GSA, Bluebook, & ICMJE, along with many other major style guides.

If you regularly assign research papers for your courses, Citation can save you a lot of time, and provide strong
support for the instructions you give students on the necessity of documenting sources accurately.
Citation departmental licenses
If your department has a site license for Citation, students can download Citation from the web when they are enrolled in a
class using Citation as a text. See http://www.asksam.com/citation/sales.asp for information and pricing on
departmental subscriptions. For a flat rate, your department can provide all your students and faculty with a
cost-effective and efficient method of documenting sources and organizing notes.
Discount for classroom groups of 20 or more students
Citation can be ordered for groups & classes of 20 or more, when Citation is a required text, for $36
each ($35+$1 shipping) Orders with the classroom discount must be charged to a single credit card
(or prepaid by check) and shipped to the same address, or ordered by the bookstore.
Classroom orders at this discounted price must be handled by either the teacher, the dept, or
