Enter the year of publication in the Year field, and specific dates in the Day/month field.

Examples

Book, first edition
For books and other significant works, enter the year in which the work was published in the Year field. For most books, the date of publication is usually the copyright date.

Book, edition other than first
For editions other than the first, enter the year of publication for the edition you are citing in the Year field, and include a description of the edition.

If, for clarity, you wish to include the original date of publication, use the Book (extended form), and enter the original date of publication in the Role/Publication Status field.

Book or article, translation published separately
If the work is a translation published separately, enter the date of publication for the translation in the record. Enter the publication date of the original work in the Orig Publication Date field.

Article in a scholarly journal
Very often, scholarly journals include a volume number, an issue number, as well as a month or quarter of publication. It is not necessary (nor, in many cases, proper) to include all of this information in your record (and your references).

If the journal paginates issues consecutively throughout a volume, you should enter only the volume number and the year of publication.

If the journal begins each issue with page 1, enter the volume number, and either the issue number or the month of publication.

Popular periodicals & newspapers
Magazines and other popular periodicals usually identify issues by the Month of publication. Enter the month or quarter in the Day/month field.

If the periodical is a newspaper or newletter published weekly, enter the day as well as the month of publication in the Day/month field. Please note that Citation does not alter the contents of this field. Enter abbreviations for months required by the publishing style you use most frequently, and edit this information for other publishing styles.

Work accepted for publication, in press or forthcoming
If the work has been accepted for publication, but is not yet available, enter the term "in press" or "forthcoming" in the Publication Status field, and, if known, enter the year in which the work will be published in the Year field.

Multivolume work published over a range of years or in progress
Multivolume works are often published over a range of years. If the work is in progress, with other volumes slated to be published at a later date, and you are citing the entire multivolume set, enter the year in which the first volume was published, and enter a dash to indicate that the publication date is incomplete. Enter the number of volumes currently available, with the tag "to date" in the Volume field.

If the set is complete, enter the year of publication for the first and last volume in the Year field.

Work submitted for publication
If the work has been submitted for publication but not yet accepted, enter the date on which the work was completed.

Reprinted book
If the book has been reprinted by the same publisher, or republished by a different publisher, use the Reprinted book form. Enter the year of the edition you consulted or are citing in your paper in the Year field, and the original publication year in the Original Publication Year field.

Reprinted article
If the article has been reprinted in a collection, use the Reprinted article form. Enter the year of the publication for the collection in which the article appears in the Year field, and the original publication year for the journal in the Original Publication Year field.

Cases, statutes, and other legal materials
For cases, enter the year in which the decision was published, or the statute enacted in the Year field.
